Business Case for Well Planning – Integrated Scheduling

WellCycle Well Planning - Integrated Scheduling

When Wellcycle first engages with oil companies we assess the current state:

  • We commonly find that spreadsheets are the primary means of scheduling activity dates throughout the Well Planning process
  • Companies tend to track actual dates when activities are completed, but are not planning target activity dates to guide departmental priorities
  • All groups work independently maintaining their own schedules: Resource Development, Geology, Regulatory, Land, Facilities, Construction, Drilling, Completions, Production
  • Many of the same activity dates are duplicated in these individual departmental schedules and often dates are different in each department’s schedule
  • Often there are version issues where people are not getting their information from the most current schedules. This issue is exaggerated as these schedules get emailed from group to group with inconsistent frequency
  • There is debate over which group owns certain activity dates and which group provides the source of the truth
  • Each department has people allocated to gathering target and actual dates to keep their schedules up to date. This information is often gathered by making calls or sending emails to other departments. This is a very time consuming process that is replicated in all departments

WellCycle Addresses These Challenges:

  • WellCycle Well Planning provides a single, integrated schedule for planning and tracking of all Well Planning activity, including critical pre-drilling tasks, the company-wide rig schedule, and completions activities.
  • Each functional discipline can manage their own activities within the integrated schedule, while maintaining the ability to schedule each pad / well from planning to production.
  • Activities can be automatically scheduled based on their relationship to other activities within the integrated schedule. i.e. Submittal of Permits should occur 90 days prior to the scheduled Spud date
  • Target activity dates will automatically update based on changes in strategic priority within the drilling schedule
  • The organization determines which department is responsible for each activity in the schedule and who will update each specific activity date
  • Redundant activity dates are consolidated
  • All departments access the same integrated schedule
  • Spreadsheets are replaced by online views and reports pulling from this common, integrated schedule

Results / Benefits:

  • Creates a single source of the truth for well planning activity dates
  • Eliminates redundant effort gathering data and updating independent schedules, reducing resource costs
  • Reduces errors by eliminating redundant activity dates and versioning issues
  • Facilitates better decisions since departments are no longer making decisions based on incorrect or dated schedules
  • Facilitates smooth hand-offs between departments to expedite the well planning process
